YOUR AUGUST TO DO LIST.
Get your "to do list" based on the the area you live. Information and to do lists are organized by the plant hardiness zones across Canada, United States, and Europe. If you do not know what planting zone you live in check the chart for the country you live in.

ZONES 1-3
- Harvest your crops as they mature.
- Harvest
tomatoes
as close to being fully ripe as possible. Reduce foliage and pinch off green fruits to speed fruit ripening before first frost.
- Use or preserve the produce as soon as possible for the best nutrition and taste.
- Prepare frost protection for tender young plants and tomatoes plants.
- Water plants as needed and mulch soil.
- Pull and compost large weeds and any plant material that is ready to be pulled up.
ZONES 4-5
- Harvest your crops as they mature.
- Use or preserve the produce as soon as possible for the best nutrition and taste.
- Harvest tomatoes as close to being fully ripe as possible.
- As weather cools plant out any
seedlings
or direct seed for fall and winter harvesting.
- Water plants as needed and mulch.
- Pull and compost large weeds and any plant material that is ready to be pulled up.
- Plant cover crops on any bare areas in your garden.
- Prepare for early frost by having old blankets and sheets on hand.
ZONES 6-7
- Harvest your crops as they mature.
- Use or preserve the produce as soon as possible for the best nutrition and taste.
- Keep watering and fertilizing as needed.
- Encourage vigorous growth and early ripening by giving your tomato plants a low nitrogen foliar fertilizer.
- If
cucumbers
and eggplants are bitter it is a sign that they are not getting enough water.
- Plant peas so they will start producing once the weather cools.
- Use floating row covers to protect plants from the heat and pests.
ZONES 8-10
- Harvest your crops as they mature.
- Use or preserve the produce as soon as possible for the best nutrition and taste.
- Fertilize fall vegetables that you planted last month.
- Continue watering your tomatoes but avoid overhead watering as this can cause blight or the fruit to crack.
- Bend
onion
tops and start harvesting later in the month.
- Plant peas so they will start producing once the weather cools.
- Plant bush beans weekly from now until mid-October.
- Use floating row covers to protect plants from the heat and pests.
- Seed some lettuce and as it germinates and cover to protect from birds.
